The Ministry of Education has condemned the violent incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, describing the actions of those involved as criminal and directing the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the matter and sanction those found culpable.
This follows reports of a violent disturbance at the school during which the headmaster was allegedly attacked by a mob of students over claims that he had been seen burying a foetus in a nearby bush.
The students further alleged that the foetus was linked to an alleged abortion involving a female student.
The unrest prompted the Obuasi Municipal Assembly to order the indefinite closure of the school after security personnel were deployed to restore calm. Police have since arrested six students in connection with the alleged assault, while three staff bungalows, vehicles and other property on the campus were reportedly vandalised during the disturbance.
Reacting to the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, the Ministry said it strongly condemns the violence.
“The Ministry of Education unequivocally condemns the violent incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.”
The Ministry described the incident as unacceptable and warned that acts of violence would not be tolerated in educational institutions.
“The Ministry considers this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such conduct has no place within Ghana’s educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”*
It disclosed that the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Education Service to launch an immediate investigation into the disturbance.
The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring discipline and safety across Ghana’s schools.
