A delegation from the School of Petroleum Studies at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has held discussions with the Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Mr Edmond Kombat, to explore opportunities for closer collaboration between the two institutions.
The delegation paid a courtesy visit to Mr Kombat on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to discuss practical ways of strengthening ties between the university and the refinery.
The discussions focused on aligning UMaT’s teaching and research activities with the operational and business needs of TOR, particularly the development of graduates equipped with practical, industry-ready skills.
The delegation comprised Prof Richard Amorin, Dean of the School of Petroleum Studies; Associate Prof Harrison Osei, Vice-Dean; Associate Prof Ohenewaa K. Dankwa, Head of Petroleum Geosciences and Engineering; and Dr Ato Fanyin-Martin, Head of University Training Coordination.
The engagement provided an opportunity for both institutions to consider how university-based research and training could better respond to the practical demands of the petroleum industry.
Closer collaboration between UMaT and TOR could help strengthen the link between academic learning and industrial practice, while preparing students for the technical and operational challenges of the energy sector.
As part of the visit, the delegation toured the refinery and observed rehabilitation works and ongoing upgrades to key assets.
The tour offered the university representatives an opportunity to learn more about the work being undertaken to restore and improve the refinery’s facilities.
The visit concluded with discussions on potential areas of cooperation between the two institutions, although specific agreements or timelines for collaboration were not announced.
The engagement highlights the potential for stronger partnerships between Ghanaian universities and industry to support skills development, applied research and the preparation of graduates for the country’s petroleum sector.
