Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed concerns about his personal safety and the state of Ghana’s democratic space under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
His comments come ahead of the NPP’s planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration scheduled for Thursday, August 6, which the party says is aimed at defending constitutional governance, the rule of law and the fundamental freedoms of Ghanaians.
Speaking on Joy News on Wednesday, August 5, Mr. Aboagye said the planned protest was motivated by growing concerns among some citizens that their rights to freely express their views on national issues could be restricted.
He said he personally feels vulnerable because of his outspoken nature and his active participation in public discussions, adding that citizens should be able to express their opinions without fear of intimidation or repercussions.
“I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I told you I have written to the Chief Justice. I personally don’t feel safe because I talk and I can’t stop talking. I love to talk, and I love to debate,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye added that his concerns reflect the feelings of many others expected to participate in the demonstration, who he believes are worried about protecting their freedom of speech and democratic rights.
He maintained that the protest is intended to draw attention to the need to safeguard Ghana’s democratic institutions and ensure that constitutional freedoms remain protected.
