The Dagbon Traditional Council is set to enskin the Regent of Dagbon today, Friday, 31 July 2026, in Yendi as part of the traditional processes following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abukari II.

The ceremony, which will take place at the Gbewaa Palace and adjoining Durbar Grounds, is expected to bring together traditional rulers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, security chiefs, development partners and hundreds of mourners and well-wishers.

Activities will begin with the arrival and seating of chiefs, elders and invited guests in accordance with Dagbon custom, followed by the customary enskinment of the Regent by the Yeni Kpamba.

Following the enskinment, the Regent will be formally introduced to the public and ceremonially escorted to the Durbar Grounds, where royal citations, traditional salutations and homage will be performed by senior traditional leaders.

The event will also be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, who is expected to arrive in the afternoon and deliver a keynote address.

Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is also scheduled to address the gathering, while solidarity messages will be delivered by representatives of sister kingdoms and traditional areas.

The programme will feature an opening address by the Regent of Dagbon, remarks from the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), a vote of thanks, cultural performances and interfaith prayers led by Islamic and Christian religious leaders.

The enskinment of the Regent is a significant customary event in Dagbon’s succession process, ensuring continuity of traditional authority and governance while preparations continue for the eventual selection and installation of a new Yaa-Naa in accordance with Dagbon customs and traditions.
