The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called for stronger and more resilient pension systems across Africa to promote financial stability and support sustainable economic development.
Speaking at the Africa Pension Supervisors Association (APSA) Annual Conference in Accra on Thursday, 30 July 2026, Dr. Asiama underscored the critical role pension institutions play in protecting long-term savings and strengthening the continent’s financial sector.
He stressed the need for closer collaboration among pension regulators, enhanced supervisory frameworks, greater technological resilience and timely data sharing to effectively address emerging risks within Africa’s financial ecosystem.
According to the Governor, strengthening governance and oversight of pension systems is essential to building confidence in financial institutions and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.
“Financial stability ultimately depends on confidence in the governance of institutions, the integrity of markets, the security of financial infrastructure, and the capacity of authorities to respond when risks emerge,” Dr. Asiama said.
He noted that robust pension systems not only safeguard the retirement savings of millions of Africans but also contribute significantly to capital market development and broader economic growth.
The APSA Annual Conference brought together pension regulators, policymakers, financial sector experts and industry stakeholders from across the continent to discuss strategies for strengthening pension supervision, enhancing regulatory cooperation and improving the resilience of Africa’s retirement systems in an increasingly evolving financial landscape.
