The body of a university student, identified as Hanson Baah, popularly known as Armani, who reportedly drowned in the River Birim while allegedly on his way to join a group to engage in illegal mining, has been retrieved.

The incident happened on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Akyem Okyinso in the Kwaebibirem Municipality, Eastern Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the young man attempted to cross the river but was swept away by the strong current.

His disappearance left the entire Akyem Abaam community, where he hails from, anxious.

Local residents and volunteers launched a search to recover his body on Saturday, but it was only recovered Monday evening around 5:00 p.m.

The body has been deposited at the Kade Government Hospital morgue pending an autopsy report.

Meanwhile, three Chinese nationals have been arrested, and two excavators seized in the same Akyem Abaam community for engaging in illegal mining.

The operation was led by the Kwaebibirem Municipal Chief Executive, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, in collaboration with the Kade District Police.
