Two BECE candidates have helped expose an alleged Senior High School placement scam, leading to the arrest of two persons in Accra.
The candidates reportedly alerted the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, after they were allegedly approached by individuals demanding money in exchange for securing placement into their preferred Senior High Schools.
They also provided evidence to support their claims, prompting the Minister to alert the relevant security authorities.
A team from the Ministry of Education subsequently arrested two suspects at the Resolution Centre in Accra at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
The suspects have been identified as 24-year-old University of Ghana graduate Vicentia Appiah Antwi and 18-year-old unemployed Suzzy Owusu.
According to the Intelligence Unit of the CID Headquarters, the suspects allegedly collected between GH¢9,500 and GH¢22,000 from victims, depending on their preferred schools, after claiming they could facilitate their placement.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly named Nana Yaw Boateng, described as a supposed medical doctor at Kwadaso SDA Hospital in Kumasi, and Alex Asumani, also known as “Lexus”, as alleged accomplices.
The Police have asked the two named persons to report to the CID Intelligence Unit to assist with investigations.
The suspects were interrogated, cautioned and detained for 24 hours before being granted bail and released to a credible surety to assist investigators in tracing the alleged main culprits.
Statements have also been obtained from the two victims and their parents.
The Ministry of Education has reiterated that placement through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) is free.
The Ministry said, “placement through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) is free, and no parent or student should pay money to anyone in exchange for placement.”
It has urged parents, students and the public to report suspected cases of extortion, fraud or attempts to manipulate the placement process to the appropriate authorities.
