Ghana’s relationship with the Czech Republic is set for a major boost following the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement to improve air connectivity and trade between the two nations.
After bilateral talks with Czech President Petr Pavel, President John Dramani Mahama addressed the media, emphasising the importance of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both countries, which he described as a catalyst for enhanced cooperation in tourism, commerce, and investment.
“The implementation of this Air Transport Agreement will reinvigorate and spearhead cooperation in various sectors between our two countries,” President Mahama said.
The agreement comes as both countries reaffirm their long-standing diplomatic ties, which date back to 1961 when Ghana and the Czech Republic established diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals.
President Mahama also expressed optimism about exploring new frontiers of cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels, noting that this will create opportunities for economic growth, cultural exchange, and political dialogue.
Mr Mahama called for stronger trade and investment collaboration between Ghana and the Czech Republic, emphasising the necessity of enhancing economic relations. He noted that while trade between the two nations remains low, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents immense potential for Czech investors.
“With Africa’s population exceeding 1.3 billion, the AfCFTA offers a unique gateway for Czech businesses to expand into the continent,” President Mahama stated. He invited Czech entrepreneurs to partner with Ghanaian counterparts to leverage these opportunities.
The discussions also touched on stalled infrastructure projects, including the fifty (50) Bridges Programme, which was delayed due to Ghana’s debt exchange programme. Both leaders agreed to explore ways to revive the initiative and proceed with a second phase involving 100 additional bridges.
