The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has engaged stakeholders in the Central Region as part of efforts to raise awareness of the Fund’s interventions and support for patients requiring specialised medical care.
The engagement, held in Cape Coast, focused on the vision behind the initiative, popularly known as MahamaCares, which seeks to ease the financial burden on families dealing with chronic and Non-Communicable Diseases.
The Adminstrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Miss Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, said the initiative was introduced under the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to help address the high cost of treating conditions that require specialised healthcare.
She noted that the cost of treatment for such illnesses had placed considerable pressure on families, with some exhausting their savings and selling properties to pay medical bills.
Miss Darko-Opoku said the fund was intended to help reduce this financial burden and improve access to specialised treatment for eligible patients.
The Central Regional Minister, Ekow Okyere Panyin Eduamoah, urged residents to embrace the initiative and make regular health checks a priority.
He highlighted the financial difficulties associated with treating certain serious illnesses and noted that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund was providing financial support for patients facing such challenges.
The Minister stressed the need for the initiative to achieve its intended objectives, saying the fund had come to stay and that efforts must be made to ensure it served the people effectively.
A beneficiary of the fund, Madam Stella Vondee, also shared her family’s experience, recounting how her daughter suffered from an illness that required medical treatment.
She said the treatment bills were covered through MahamaCares, helping her daughter receive the care she needed.
According to Madam Vondee, her daughter’s condition has since stabilised.
Her testimony highlighted the potential impact of financial assistance on families struggling to meet the cost of specialised healthcare.
