The Minority in Parliament has condemned the recent approval of electricity and water tariff increases, calling them unjust and harmful to households and businesses.
Addressing the media, Ranking Member for the Committee on Energy, George Aboagye, said the hikes—over 9% for electricity and 15% for water—“shift the burden of government inefficiencies onto ordinary Ghanaians.”
Aboagye highlighted persistent technical and commercial losses in the energy sector, arguing that addressing these inefficiencies should take priority over penalizing consumers.
He warned that failing to reverse the tariffs could worsen living costs, threaten small businesses, lead to job losses, and reduce the country’s economic productivity.
The Minority insisted that the government halt the increases immediately and implement measures to protect consumers, maintain business sustainability, and uphold fairness in utility management.
“We call on the government to immediately halt these incessant increases…Ghanaians deserve relief, not repeated shocks. They deserve leadership, not exploitation. And we as the minority caucus will continue to hold this government accountable and defend the rights of the people.”
