Ghana’s national currency, the cedi, marks its 60th anniversary this year, a milestone the Bank of Ghana is celebrating under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”
The official launch of the Cedi@60 celebration will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the year-long commemoration is aimed at reflecting on six decades of Ghana’s monetary journey, reinforcing the public’s confidence in the national currency, and celebrating the cedi’s role as a cornerstone of economic identity and sovereignty.
Key activities include a National Currency Conference that will gather global central bankers, academics, and industry leaders to discuss Ghana’s financial evolution and the future of its monetary policy.
wThere will also be regional roadshows, public education campaigns on clean note handling and currency security, as well as youth-focused competitions in art, music, and essay writing to foster national pride.
The cedi, first introduced on July 19, 1965, symbolized Ghana’s economic independence following colonial rule and has since undergone several reforms and redesigns.
The Cedi@60 celebration, the Bank noted, is intended not only to honour this legacy but also to renew public trust in the currency as a pillar of national stability and resilience.
The event will be broadcast live across EIB Network’s television and radio platforms, giving Ghanaians nationwide the opportunity to participate in the historic commemoration.
