President John Dramani Mahama has announced the creation of a Specialised Children’s Support Fund to provide long-term care for the children of the eight people who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, and three Air Force officers—Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Speaking at the interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, President Mahama said the Fund would guarantee the education, healthcare, and general welfare of the children left behind.
“The Fund for the children of the victims of the August 6, as it has officially been named, will cover education from primary through to university or technical training, healthcare including medical insurance, specialised care where required, and welfare support, clothing, shelter, and essential living expenses,” he assured.
The President disclosed that Stanbic Bank has opened an account with an initial deposit of GH₵500,000, while government will provide a seed contribution. A full framework for the Fund will be published within 30 days, with annual public reporting to ensure transparency.
President Mahama also invited citizens, corporate bodies, and professional associations to contribute, stressing that the Fund must be sustained to honour the memory of the fallen and secure the future of their children.
