Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in a ceremony that was briefly overshadowed by a walkout from the Minority in Parliament.
The walkout was triggered when Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh requested to make a statement before the oath was administered.
After catching the Speaker’s attention, Annoh-Dompreh attempted to raise the matter, but Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga objected, insisting that any concerns should be addressed after the swearing-in.
Speaker Alban Bagbin upheld the Majority Leader’s position and ruled that any statement could be made after the ceremony.
Despite the brief disruption, the Speaker proceeded with the ceremony, officially inducting Ewurabena Aubynn into Ghana’s Parliament as the MP for Ablekuma North. Her swearing-in follows her victory in the recent by-election.
Her landmark victory in the July 11 parliamentary rerun, where she secured 34,090 votes to defeat the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes—a razor-thin margin of 209 votes across all 281 polling stations.
It marks the first time the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Ablekuma North seat, breaking the NPP’s decades-long dominance in the constituency and delivering a major symbolic and political win for the opposition.
