An aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, says their camp is unperturbed by the recent endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 NPP Members of Parliament (MPs).
Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, speaking on Joy FM on Thursday, June 19, stated that the team remains focused on pursuing a unique and independent strategy toward the party’s presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026.
“As far as we’re concerned, we are unperturbed – very key thing. We’re more interested in doing something very different from what we’ve always been doing. So I must admit that this noise, or as it is, statement of declaration, is shocking for me, or surprising, because in my discussions with their leadership, at some point, it was very clear in my mind that the ninth Parliamentarians will not, as it is, make a declaration.”
His remarks follow a high-profile visit by a group of over 60 NPP MPs to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday, June 19, at his private office.
The MPs, drawn from constituencies across the country, pledged their support and encouraged him to officially declare his intention to contest the 2028 presidential election.
Although Dr. Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, is yet to formally announce his bid, he is widely regarded as a frontrunner in the race.
The endorsement comes on the heels of the NPP’s announcement that its presidential primaries will take place on January 31, 2026. The date was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council to allow sufficient time for campaigning and party unity ahead of the 2028 elections.
Among the MPs present were prominent figures including Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Sammi Awuku, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Habib Iddrisu, and Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah.
Meanwhile, four leading NPP personalities have so far declared their intent to contest the flagbearer position: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
