EC Chair to appear before Parliament over Ablekuma North results

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, is expected to appear before Parliament next week to address concerns surrounding the unresolved parliamentary results in the Ablekuma North constituency.

This was revealed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga on Friday, June 13, 2025, when he presented the Business Statement for the upcoming week on the floor of the House.

“The Electoral Commission will be asked two questions, so the EC Chair will appear before the Committee of the whole to answer two questions” Mr. Ayariga indicated.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary seat has remained vacant since the start of the 9th Parliament in January 2025, following a disputed outcome in the December 2024 general elections.

Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie have claimed victory.

The EC suspended the collation of results on January 5, 2025, citing disruptions and the emergence of unauthenticated figures at the collation centre. Since then, no official declaration has been made, resulting in a political deadlock.

Despite repeated calls from stakeholders and constituents, the EC is yet to complete the collation process. On May 30, 2025, the Commission held high-level meetings with the Ghana Police Service in an attempt to chart a path forward, but no conclusive roadmap has been announced.

The prolonged impasse has left residents of Ablekuma North without parliamentary representation, sparking frustration and concerns over disenfranchisement.

Many fear that the delay is undermining public trust in the country’s electoral processes.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ayariga also announced that the Ministers for the Interior and for Works, Housing, and Water Resources are scheduled to brief Parliament on Wednesday, June 18, regarding recent nationwide flooding and the government’s response measures.
