Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) today, June 4, in compliance with his bail conditions.

His appearance comes a day after EOCO released him from custody on Monday evening following the withdrawal of a motion filed at the High Court seeking a review of his bail terms.

The motion, which was filed without his direct consent, had delayed his release despite meeting the GH₵50 million bail requirement with two justified sureties by May 30.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27 as part of ongoing investigations into alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai has indicated that the matter may be linked to a broader international crime syndicate.

Additionally, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is reportedly preparing its own independent docket on the case.

His detention triggered political backlash, with several NPP MPs and supporters calling the bail conditions excessive and politically motivated. Protests and public pressure mounted in the days following his arrest.

Confirming his release on Monday night, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua expressed gratitude to Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong for his support and assured party members of continued updates as the case unfolds.

Wontumi is now required to report to EOCO regularly as part of the conditions attached to his bail, while investigations into the matter continue.
