“I’ll demand Jesus, Angel Michael as sureties if I’m EOCO boss” – Maurice Ampaw to NDC

Private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has lashed out at what he describes as politically motivated actions in the ongoing legal saga involving NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

In a fiery interview reacting to the recent developments, Lawyer Ampaw expressed strong dissatisfaction with the legal processes being used against Wontumi, suggesting that they were fueled more by political retribution than rule of law.

He singled out the bail conditions set for Wontumi, questioning the competence and neutrality of some of the authorities involved.

“CID Boss Lydia Yaako Donkor is a lawyer, so she gave reasonable bail. But Raymond Archer is not a lawyer—he’s acting this way because the NPP demolished his property,” Ampaw alleged, referencing what he claimed were personal vendettas influencing official decisions.

With power currently held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ampaw accused the ruling party of celebrating prematurely, warning that political fortunes could soon shift.

“They should continue jubilating; this is their time, but power will one day change.”

In a particularly controversial remark, Lawyer Ampaw imagined himself as a future head of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), saying, “When power changes and I get the opportunity to be EOCO Boss, I will ask NDC to provide Jesus Christ and Angel Michael as their bail condition.”

He further criticized the silence of traditional authorities in the matter.

“The chiefs are quiet—and they should continue to be quiet if power changes,” he warned, hinting that today’s silence may be remembered under a new political order.

Wontumi has been under investigation for alleged involvement in financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Although he was granted bail set at GHC50 million with two justified sureties on May 28, administrative setbacks delayed his release, even after fulfilling the bail terms by May 30.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, assured that all outstanding legal issues are being addressed and expects the bail to take full effect today.
