The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has begun his second four-year term with the church recording significant growth in membership and congregations.
During his first tenure, the church planted 2,077 churches, increasing its total number of churches from 8,000 to 10,077, while membership grew from 812,254 to 1.2 million.
Rev. Wengam indicated that his second term will focus on accelerating the church’s Transformation Agenda, with renewed emphasis on evangelism, church planting, infrastructure development, pastoral welfare, spiritual revival and administrative reforms.
He announced this at his induction ceremony at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
The General Superintendent described the achievements as evidence of God’s grace and pledged to build on the progress rather than introduce an entirely new development agenda.
“During our second tenure, we do not intend to re-invent the wheel. Simply put, we will strive to put the Transformation Agenda in the highest spiritual gear” he stated.
“We are Rebranding to make Assemblies of God, Ghana the destination of all who seek to worship God in Spirit and in truth.
At the same time, we are pursuing spiritual, administrative and structural reforms to put our church on a higher pedestal as we approach our centenary” he further emphasised.

Rev. Wengam identified the six pillars of the Transformation Agenda as REACH, REBUILD, RESTORE, REPOSITION, REBRAND and REFORMS.
Under REACH, he said the church intends to intensify evangelism and church planting through its Every Village, Every Town a Church initiative.
He said the REBUILD component would prioritise pastors’ welfare, human resource development and infrastructure, including the Legacy Temple and Centenary City projects.
The RESTORE pillar the General Superintendent noted seeks to rekindle the spiritual revival associated with the early church and the Azusa Street Revival, while REPOSITION, REBRAND and REFORMS will strengthen leadership, improve the church’s identity and introduce institutional and administrative changes.
Rev. Wengam also announced plans to increase the church’s participation in international missions and give greater attention to the World Assemblies of God Fellowship’s MM33 initiative, which seeks to win more souls and establish one million churches globally by 2033.
177 legacy temples constructed
The General Superintendent disclosed that 177 legacy temples had been constructed since 2024 through contributions from individuals and local churches to provide better places of worship for congregations meeting under trees, sheds and other unsuitable conditions.
He named President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, among the prominent contributors, saying they had supported the construction of 10 legacy temples, each with a furnished two-bedroom residence and an office for the beneficiary pastor.
Rev. Wengam said he and his wife, Lady Mrs Monica Wengam, had also provided 10 legacy temples from his headquarters salary.
The Chief Executive Officer of First Sky Group, Deacon Eric Seddy Kutortse, he added, was committed to constructing 50 legacy temples.
Rev. Wengam further announced that preparations were advancing towards the construction of the proposed Centenary City, an international conference centre expected to accommodate about 6,000 people as part of activities marking the church’s 100th anniversary in 2031.
He said the architectural designs for the project were ready, while the 137-acre parcel of land donated by Mr Seth Quaye, a non-member of the church, was being walled.
He disclosed that President Mahama had offered to lead fundraising efforts for the project after declaring at the closing ceremony of the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship in Accra that the government would not commit public funds to its construction.
Rev. Wengam appealed to pastors, individual members and local congregations to contribute generously towards the project.
He expressed confidence that the facility would be completed in time for the church’s centenary celebrations in 2031.
“The same God who has kept faith with Assemblies of God, Ghana since its establishment by American missionaries at Yendi in 1931, will surely keep faith with the construction of the Centenary City Project. It shall be built with supernatural speed” he observed.
Beyond the church’s development agenda, Rev. Wengam expressed concern about unemployment, growing political intolerance and what he described as the worsening moral decline among Ghanaian youth.
He welcomed the government’s proposed 10-billion-dollar economic programme under the New Economy initiative but urged that its benefits translate into decent jobs for young people, improved incomes for farmers and expanded opportunities for businesses.
He said the increasing number of unemployed young people seeking opportunities at employment centres was worrying and expressed hope that the government’s economic interventions would provide meaningful relief.
On political discourse, Rev. Wengam condemned the growing culture of insults and verbal attacks, calling on political actors, religious organisations and the media to promote decency, dignity, civility and responsible communication.
He also expressed alarm over incidents of students attacking teachers for preventing examination malpractice and young people attacking police stations.
He called for a sustained national moral crusade involving churches, religious bodies, parents and other stakeholders to reverse the trend.
Rev. Wengam particularly urged parents to take responsibility for the moral upbringing of their children and ensure that they were raised in the fear of God.
He stressed that the church could not address the country’s moral challenges alone and appealed for a united effort among religious organisations and families.
The induction ceremony was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Mrs Lordina Mahama, and the Global Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, Rev. Dominic Yeo, who officiated at the ceremony. Other dignitaries included international church leaders, General Superintendents of Assemblies of God from some African countries, members of the Executive Presbytery, Regional Superintendents of Assemblies of God and ministers of state.
