The Ghana AIDS Commission is preparing to roll out a new range of ultra-thin condoms from Friday, November 6, following feedback from users about the comfort and suitability of existing products.
The redesigned condoms are expected to provide improved comfort, flexibility, durability and lubrication. They will also come in different sizes to accommodate the needs of Ghanaian men.
Speaking on Joy News on Thursday, November 5, the Commission’s Director-General, Dr Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, said the new products were developed in response to concerns raised during previous user assessments.
He explained that the Commission had taken steps to address complaints about the earlier condoms, with the latest range expected to offer a better experience while maintaining safety and effectiveness standards.
Dr. Akanbong described the products as ultra-thin, adding that their user acceptability would be comparable to other commercial ultra-thin condoms available on the market.
He said improvements in elasticity, durability and lubrication were central to the redesign, with the aim of addressing concerns that had affected user satisfaction.
The Director-General further disclosed that the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) was expected to approve the first batch before distribution begins.
Once regulatory approval is secured, the Commission will supply the new condoms to its stakeholders and other distribution centres for public access.
Dr. Akanbong indicated that the products could become available from Friday, November 6, or Monday, November 9, depending on when the FDA grants approval.
The introduction forms part of efforts to improve condom acceptability and encourage consistent use, particularly among people who have expressed dissatisfaction with the existing options.
