The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) is expected to equip the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua with specialised medical equipment by December 2026 to improve access to cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment in the region.
The planned intervention will include a digital breast mammography machine, ultrasound machines, an endoscopy machine, 10 patient monitors and chemotherapy suits.
The equipment is expected to reduce the need for patients, particularly those from low-income families, to travel outside the Eastern Region to access specialised healthcare services.
The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, announced the intervention during a town hall meeting in Koforidua as part of the Fund’s sensitisation tour of the region.
She said the initiative was intended to bring essential diagnostic and treatment services closer to communities, especially for families who struggle to afford the cost of specialised healthcare and basic laboratory investigations.
Ms Darko-Opoku called on traditional authorities, the media, market queen mothers and community leaders to help raise awareness about the Fund and ensure that eligible patients were informed about how to access its support.
She emphasised the importance of community involvement in identifying and directing patients who require financial assistance for specialised medical treatment.
The sensitisation exercise forms part of the GMTF’s efforts to expand public awareness of its mandate, eligibility requirements and application procedures.
The Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr Sananwie Suntaa Aiden, welcomed the planned intervention, describing it as timely support for the facility and patients in the region.
He, however, appealed for the provision of a dialysis machine to strengthen healthcare services for patients living with kidney-related conditions.
