The Ghana Education Service (GES) says preparations are far advanced to reopen Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) to continuing students next week, more than two months after they were sent home following disturbances on campus.

In a statement dated Thursday, October 22, 2026, the Service said it was working towards resuming academic activities for students who have been out of school since August 5.

“Management wishes to inform the public that efforts are underway to resume academic work for continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School,” the statement said.

It added, “The first year students have been in school since the reporting date on September 18, and Management assures that preparations are far advanced for continuing students to return to school sometime next week.”

The statement, signed by GES Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, did not give a specific date for the reopening.

“Further updates will be communicated, when necessary,” it said.

Obuasi SHTS was temporarily closed to continuing students on August 5 following violent disturbances on campus.

The unrest followed the discovery of what was believed to be a foetus buried on the school compound. Some students reportedly confronted headmaster Zakaria Abdulai over the incident, and the situation escalated into violence.

The headmaster was injured, school property was vandalised and six students were arrested in connection with the disturbances, according to reports at the time.

The Obuasi Municipal Security Council subsequently recommended the school’s closure to allow investigations and security measures to be undertaken.

The August unrest is separate from the sexual misconduct allegations involving Mr. Abdulai that later gained national attention following journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni’s investigative report, ‘Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow’.

The Ghana Education Service has interdicted the headmaster while investigations into the allegations continue. The case has also prompted scrutiny of how complaints were handled by education authorities.

The planned reopening is expected to allow continuing students, including those preparing for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), to resume classroom work after an extended interruption. Concerns have been raised about the loss of instructional time during the closure.
