The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective or that vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime waters are not being monitored.
In a statement dated Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the Authority described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that its maritime surveillance system is operational.
“The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana,” the Authority stated.
The GMA said it uses maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains round-the-clock surveillance within Ghana’s maritime domain.
“The Authority continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain,” it said.
It added that the system is also used to monitor and protect offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
The Authority further said it uses standard procedures to track vessels, verify their identities and ensure compliance with safety, security and environmental requirements.
“The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue,” the GMA stated.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuous maritime surveillance and urged the public to rely on its official communications.
