The Coalition of NDC Former Executives (CONFEX) has declared its support for Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu’s bid to contest the National Chairmanship of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing his decision as a “timely call to duty.”
In a solidarity statement signed by its Communications Officer, Alfa Justice, the coalition said Dr. Opong-Fosu’s declaration had been welcomed with “profound joy” as the party prepares for its National Congress scheduled for December 19, 2026.
CONFEX, which comprises former NDC executives at the branch, constituency, regional and national levels, cited Dr. Opong-Fosu’s experience as a former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation as key factors informing its support.
The coalition said his record demonstrates what it described as leadership, loyalty, sacrifice and administrative experience needed to serve as National Chairman of the party.
According to CONFEX, its support for Dr. Opong-Fosu is anchored on three main considerations: experience and loyalty, proven leadership and competence, and his ability to unite the party.
On experience and loyalty, the coalition described him as a long-standing party member whose commitment to social democracy, probity and accountability remains strong.
It also described him as a public servant and technocrat with experience in grassroots mobilisation, saying he had served the NDC with humility and dedication.
On unity, CONFEX said Dr. Opong-Fosu’s calm and consultative approach could help address internal disagreements and manage competition among different groups within the party.
The coalition further said his candidature had given hope to some members of the party’s grassroots, particularly those seeking stronger branch structures and greater recognition for dedicated party service.
“CONFEX therefore declares its unflinching solidarity and full support for Hon. Dr. Akwasi Oppong Fosu,” Alfa Justice said.
According to the coalition, Dr. Opong-Fosu’s bid offers an opportunity to strengthen party structures, prioritise the welfare of members and reward commitment to the NDC.
The endorsement comes ahead of the party’s National Congress, where the next National Chairman and other national executives will be elected.
