The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed the construction and final integration of a 4-kilometre, 161-kilovolt (kV) transmission line connecting a solar power project in Yendi to the Tamale-Yendi transmission network.
The project is expected to facilitate the integration of the Bui Power Authority’s 50-megawatt (MW) Yendi Solar Farm into Ghana’s national transmission system ahead of its anticipated opening.
According to GRIDCo, the transmission project was executed entirely by its in-house technical teams, making it the longest transmission line project completed internally by the company to date.
The work involved the erection of transmission towers, stringing of conductors, testing, opening and energisation of the new line.
As part of the project, GRIDCo’s technical teams also integrated a 66-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer into the transmission system.
The company said the project drew on expertise from several of its technical units and demonstrated GRIDCo’s capacity to undertake major transmission infrastructure projects using its internal technical resources.
GRIDCo said the new Yendi transmission link would strengthen the national grid’s capacity to accommodate renewable energy and support the expansion of solar power generation in northern Ghana.
The completed connection will enable electricity generated by the Yendi solar project to be transmitted into Ghana’s wider power network, contributing to the integration of additional renewable energy into the national electricity supply system.
