The government has commenced the process of selecting a contractor for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, with the contract expected to be awarded before the end of 2026.
An Expression of Interest for the prequalification of contractors was published on Friday, September 11, 2026, paving the way for the next stage of the procurement process.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has also published the invitation for prequalification on its procurement notices platform.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the timeline in a post on X on Monday, September 14.
According to him, the contractor selection process will take no more than four weeks before the successful contractor is identified.
“Expression of Interest for prequalification of contractors for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway was published last Friday, 11th September, 2026. This will be followed by a contractor selection process lasting not more than four weeks. Contract to be awarded before the end of the year.”
The development follows the completion of a major preparatory exercise by the Ghana Armed Forces, which cleared 175.6 kilometres of the expressway’s right-of-way.
The military engineers completed the assignment in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the 20-week deadline set for the exercise.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway forms part of the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme. The proposed 198.7-kilometre, six-lane highway will establish a new alignment connecting the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions.
The project is expected to reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi, improve the movement of passengers and goods, and reduce transportation costs along the major economic corridor.
President John Dramani Mahama has said the new alignment will also shorten the journey between the two cities, with the existing Accra-Kumasi route measuring about 270 kilometres compared with the proposed 198.7-kilometre expressway.
On financing, government has disclosed that $2 billion has been secured in a dedicated account for the commencement of the project, with the amount expected to reach $4 billion by the end of 2026.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has also ruled out borrowing to finance the project.
“For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project.”
