President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces will serve as the major sub-contractor for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The President has also directed the Regiment to begin preparations to clear the right-of-way for the proposed New Accra Orbital Road.
President Mahama made this disclosure when he supevised the handing of the Right-of -Way for the construction of Accra-Kumasi Expressway at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region
President Mahama further disclosed that $2 billion has currently been secured in a special account to facilitate the commencement of work on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
He said the amount is expected to increase to $4 billion by the end of the year, which will provide full financing for the project.
The President said the involvement of the 48 Engineer Regiment would form an important part of the implementation of the major road infrastructure project.
He further tasked the Regiment to prepare for the clearance of the right-of-way for the New Accra Orbital as part of broader efforts to improve road connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the Greater Accra Region.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the two major economic centres and support trade, transportation and economic activity along the corridor.
