President John Dramani Mahama has announced that $2 billion is currently sitting in a special account earmarked for the commencement of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The President is also projecting that the fund will reach $4 billion by the end of 2026, which government says will be sufficient to fully finance the major infrastructure project.
The development was announced by government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a post on X today, Monday, September 14, following the formal handover of the cleared right-of-way for the expressway at Ejisu-Kwaso in the Ashanti Region.
“President Mahama says there is currently $2 billion in a special account for the commencement of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
“By close of year, there will be $4 billion in the account to fully finance the project.”
The financial commitment comes after the Ghana Armed Forces completed the clearance of about 175.6 kilometres of the proposed route.
The exercise was completed in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the 20-week deadline, marking the completion of a key preparatory stage for the project.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is one of the government’s major projects under the Big Push programme. The planned six-lane road is expected to ease congestion, shorten travel times and improve the movement of goods between Greater Accra, the Eastern Region and the Ashanti Region.
Government has also ruled out borrowing to finance the project.
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said:
“For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project.”
With the right-of-way now cleared and government projecting $4 billion in the dedicated account by year-end, the project is expected to move into detailed design and procurement before the main construction phase.
