Dr Clemence Gyato has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in connection with the alleged unlawful demolition of buildings and structures at the Accra Race Course in Borteyman.
The arrest was made on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as Police investigate the demolition, which occurred on August 22.
The Ghana Police Service said Dr Gyato is currently assisting with investigations.
The Police said he was arrested “in connection with the alleged unlawful demolition of buildings and structures” at the race course.
The development follows the demolition of parts of the Accra Turf Club facility, which reportedly affected more than 100 horse stables, track railings and other structures.
The Accra Turf Club has accused armed men of forcibly entering the facility with an excavator and nine bulldozers and carrying out the demolition.
The incident has generated strong opposition from Ghana’s horse racing community, which is demanding accountability and state intervention.
During a demonstration in Accra on Thursday, the club presented petitions to the Presidency, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
“We have come not merely to protest, but to seek the intervention of the highest office of our motherland Ghana in order for justice to prevail,” the club said.
Dr Gyato’s arrest comes after the Police Administration interdicted DSP Alhassan Malaika Jibril over alleged involvement in the demolition.
The Police said the interdiction was to enable investigators to conduct their work without interference and assured that anyone found culpable would face due process.
Investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the demolition and identify others who may have been involved.
