More than 80 owners of stores and pubs at Kasoa in the Central Region have been fined by the Kasoa Akweley District Court for selling expired drinks and other products to consumers.
The offenders were fined between GHS1,200 and GHS3,600 after being prosecuted by the Environmental Health Directorate of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly.
Following the court proceedings, the Directorate, acting on a court order, disposed of the confiscated expired products at the Bentum dumping site.
The items destroyed included more than 300 assorted carbonated drinks, about 13 crates of alcoholic beverages and 12 body creams.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, the Environmental Health Officer in charge of Prosecution, Paa Kwesi Asiedu, said the enforcement action was carried out in accordance with the Assembly’s by-laws.
He explained that the prosecution of the offenders and subsequent destruction of the expired products were part of efforts to protect public health and prevent consumers from purchasing and consuming unsafe products.
The Awutu Senya East Environmental Health Director, Godson Mawutor Lodo, urged store and pub owners to regularly inspect their stock and promptly remove expired products from their shelves.
He also advised members of the public to check the expiry dates of food, drinks, cosmetics and other consumable products before purchasing them.
The authorities warned that businesses found selling expired products would continue to face enforcement action in line with the relevant laws and regulations.
