Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court over an alleged death threat against Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers is expected to reappear before the court on September 2, 2026.
The development follows his arrest after he reported himself to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, August 24, 2026, in connection with a video circulating on social media in which he was alleged to have issued threats against the NSA Director-General.
The 46-year-old former boxer was subsequently detained by the police and was presented before the Dansoman Circuit Court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, for prosecution.
The court subsequently remanded him for one week and ordered him to reappear on September 2.
The latest development was disclosed in an update on the case, which the Police also urged members of the public and stakeholders to exercise restraint in their comments while the matter goes through the legal process.
The Police stressed that Ghana is governed by the rule of law and cautioned against verbal assaults, malicious comments and threats, warning that such conduct could have legal consequences.
“No matter what the situation, let us be guided that there is a rule of law governing this country and no matter who you are, if you are caught in the web of the law, you may find yourself in hot waters,” the statement said.
