Razak Kojo Opoku questions standards for NPP National Vice-chairmanship race

A strategist and staunch member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Razak Kojo Opoku, has questioned what he describes as the declining standards for individuals seeking senior leadership positions within the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to Dr Opoku, certain activities and past conduct appear to be increasingly treated as benchmarks for candidates seeking the position of National Vice-Chairperson of the NPP.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Saturday, August 23, 2026, he questioned whether organising health walks, leading demonstrations, visiting individuals at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and police stations, disrupting a live television press conference, engaging in a physical confrontation with NDC figure Chief Azorka and publicly chanting “chooboi” should form part of the criteria for assessing candidates for the position.

He also referenced past membership of the Delta Force, a pro-NPP vigilante group, as another attribute that he said appeared to be gaining prominence in the contest.

Dr Opoku expressed concern that such considerations could undermine the quality of leadership being sought for the party.

“Very unfortunate. The bar has been lowered too much,” he said.

His comments come as the NPP prepares for its internal reorganisation and leadership contests ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Dr Opoku’s remarks are likely to fuel further debate within the party over the qualities, experience and leadership credentials that should determine who occupies key national positions as the NPP seeks to rebuild and position itself for the next general election.
