The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) says a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line caused disruptions to power supply in parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants.
The company explained that the automatic tripping was activated by the power system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The incident consequently resulted in power outages in several parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and began the safe and systematic restoration of electricity supply.
The company reported that power had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration work continued in other locations.
GRIDCo assured the public that all relevant technical teams had been mobilised and were working urgently to restore electricity supply to all remaining affected customers.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and said it would continue to provide updates as restoration efforts progressed.
GRIDCo also appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as technical teams work towards full restoration of the national power system.
