The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has cautioned the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against complacency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Koomson said the party must begin preparations early, learn from its past mistakes and strengthen its internal structures to prevent the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) from returning to power.
Speaking on Ahotor FM in Accra, he warned that the NDC must not create weaknesses that could give the NPP an opportunity to regain political relevance.
He urged the NDC leadership to remain united, uphold democratic principles and ensure that the government’s policies and decisions continue to meet the expectations of Ghanaians.
“The NDC should not make the mistake of allowing the NPP to resurface.
It will be very dangerous to allow the NPP to come back to power,” he cautioned.
Mr. Koomson also urged government appointees to exercise greater caution in the discharge of their duties, warning that their conduct could directly affect public perception of the Mahama administration.
He said ministers, officials and other government appointees must recognise that their individual actions, public statements and decisions can influence the government’s popularity and, consequently, the NDC’s prospects in the 2028 elections.
According to him, appointees should avoid unnecessary controversies and conduct themselves in ways that protect the government’s achievements rather than undermine them.
“The appointees must tread cautiously. They shouldn’t become a liability to the government’s gains. They shouldn’t do things that will make this government unpopular,” he said.
Mr. Koomson said the NDC government must remain focused on delivering on its campaign promises and maintaining public confidence if it intends to secure another mandate in 2028.
He warned that complacency, internal disagreements and controversial conduct by government officials could create opportunities for the NPP to capitalise on public dissatisfaction.
He therefore called on the party to address emerging political and legal challenges early rather than waiting until the election season.
Mr. Koomson stressed that the NDC’s chances of retaining power would depend not only on the government’s policies and achievements but also on the conduct, performance and accountability of its officials.
He said the party must take the 2028 elections seriously and begin laying the groundwork for a successful re-election campaign well in advance.
