The Chief Executive Officer of Adamus Resources Limited, Angela List, has commenced legal action against the Editor of the New Republic newspaper, David Tamakloe, and Ralph Ofori Adeniram over alleged defamatory publications concerning her.
The suit, filed through her lawyers, seeks an interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants from further publishing or republishing statements concerning Ms. List that she considers defamatory.
The legal action follows a series of publications and social media posts which Ms. List’s lawyers contend have falsely linked their client to illegal mining activities.
Among the publications cited in the court documents is a Facebook post attributed to Mr. Tamakloe with the statement: “Wontumi Jailed, Angela List is Next.”
Her lawyers argue that the post insinuated that Ms. List had committed an offence relating to illegal mining without establishing such a claim.
The lawyer, APATU-PLANGE & CO PRU also cited a headline published by the New Republic which described Ms. List as the “Galamsey Queen of Nzema” and alleged that she had turned an Australian mine into a “Galamsey Empire.”
According to the applicant’s lawyers, the publications were false, unsubstantiated and damaging to Ms. List’s reputation as a mining executive.
In the motion for interlocutory injunction filed pursuant to Order 25 of C.I. 47, the lawyers are asking the court to restrain Mr. Tamakloe and Mr. Adeniram, as well as their agents, assigns and associated media platforms, from further publishing, republishing or broadcasting allegedly defamatory statements concerning Ms. List pending the determination of the substantive suit.
The defendants include Mr. Tamakloe, who is also President of the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and Mr. Adeniram, with the New Republic, its website and Whatsup News identified among the platforms through which the publications were allegedly disseminated.
The suit is expected to bring the disputed publications before the court for determination, including the claims of defamation and the request for an injunction against further publication.
