Members of Parliament on the Minority side have appeared in Parliament dressed in black to protest the conviction and sentencing of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The lawmakers wore the black attire as a symbolic gesture to express their displeasure with the court’s decision, describing it as a matter of concern that requires public attention.
Chairman Wontumi was convicted by the High Court in a case that has generated significant political debate, with the NPP maintaining that the judgment was flawed and announcing plans to challenge the decision through the appropriate legal channels.
The Minority Caucus has since raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the conviction, arguing that the development raises questions about fairness and due process.
The Minority protect was visisble when the Minister for Finance was in Parliament to present the Mid-Year Budget Review.
The protest comes amid growing political reactions from within the NPP, with party leaders and supporters rallying behind the Ashanti Regional Chairman and calling for respect for the rule of law while pursuing legal remedies.
