The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Central Region has strengthened its collaboration with the Ghana Police Service following a working visit by the Acting Regional Director of the NHIA to the Central Regional Police Command.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, was aimed at deepening cooperation between the two institutions, particularly in the areas of healthcare access, security, and public education.
The Acting Central Regional Director of the NHIA, Mr. Kojo Sekyere Koi Thompson, highlighted the importance of ensuring that police officers and their families have active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards to enable them to access healthcare services across the country.
He explained that considering the demanding and risky nature of police work, officers require reliable healthcare support to respond effectively to emergencies and health challenges arising from their duties.
Mr. Thompson described healthcare and security as essential pillars of society, noting that effective security enables people to go about their daily activities, while quality healthcare ensures individuals remain productive and able to pursue their goals.
He assured the Regional Commander of the NHIA’s commitment to enrolling all police officers and their dependants onto the NHIS to improve access to healthcare services.
The Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. Ohene-Boadi Bossman, welcomed the initiative and acknowledged the stressful nature of policing, emphasizing the need for officers to maintain active NHIS cards to access essential health services, including routine screenings such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks.
He expressed his support for the initiative and directed that the registration of police personnel and their families begin immediately.
The Deputy Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service also commended the NHIA for its previous registration exercise involving police officers and their families, and called for such initiatives to be organized regularly.
As part of the engagement, the Acting Regional Director presented NHIS-branded souvenirs, including mugs, pens, diaries, caps, key holders, and educational materials, to the Regional Police Commander.
Both institutions agreed to enhance intelligence sharing, strengthen public education, and work together to protect members while maintaining the integrity of the NHIS.
