Wontumi’s conviction marks progress in fight against galamsey – Jatikay Centre

The Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building has described the conviction and 20-year prison sentence handed to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as a significant development in Ghana’s efforts to tackle illegal mining.

In a statement issued after the judgment, the Centre said the ruling reflects the importance of enforcing the law without regard to political affiliation or social standing, noting that it has consistently advocated the prosecution of all individuals involved in illegal mining.

“Today’s judgment represents an important step towards demonstrating that the rule of law can prevail over impunity.”

While welcoming the outcome, the Centre stressed that a single conviction would not be enough to eliminate galamsey, urging the authorities to ensure that enforcement remains consistent and free from political influence.

“While one conviction alone will not end illegal mining, it sends a strong signal that accountability is indispensable if Ghana is to protect its forests, rivers and other natural resources.”

The organisation also commended the judiciary for its role in the case and called on law enforcement agencies and other state institutions to maintain the momentum by pursuing all offenders equally.

According to the Centre, public confidence in the country’s anti-galamsey campaign will depend on a fair and impartial approach that holds every offender accountable, regardless of status or political connections.
