The Government of Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the death of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II of Dagbon, extending condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the nation.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, and signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government described the late Yaa Naa as a respected traditional ruler whose leadership helped restore peace and reconciliation in Dagbon after years of conflict.

President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the government, conveyed his sympathies, saying, “The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II. On behalf of the Government of Ghana, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of immense grief.”

The statement credited the late king’s commitment to unity, stability and the well-being of his people for fostering development and strengthening collaboration between traditional authorities and the government across Dagbon and Ghana.

Paying tribute to his service, the government said the Yaa Naa’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation. May his wisdom, leadership, and dedication to peace continue to inspire future generations,” the statement said.

Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II ascended the Dagbon throne in 2019 following a historic peace agreement that ended the long-standing Dagbon chieftaincy conflict. Widely regarded as a symbol of reconciliation, his reign was marked by peace, stability and the revival of traditional institutions in the kingdom.

The government concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the late traditional ruler’s soul.
