Greater Accra NDC in Turmoil: Women Organizer Pours Hot Water on Chairman

As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) braces for the December 7 general elections, the Greater Accra branch of the party is engrossed with internal conflict, threatening its electoral prospects. Tensions reached a boiling point during a Regional Executive meeting on July 4, 2024 at the Regional Party office in La, culminating in a dramatic and physical altercation between Regional Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and Regional Women’s Organizer Felicia Mekpoi Bortey.

The Incident

According to credible sources within the Greater Accra NDC, the conflict erupted when Felicia Mekpoi Bortey sought to address issues related to the distribution of motorbikes in the Sege Constituency. Chairman Ashie Moore’s refusal to let her speak led to a heated argument. The situation quickly escalated, with both parties exchanging severe insults. Witnesses report that the confrontation became particularly volatile when Chairman Moore made disparaging remarks about Bortey’s character, which included accusations of promiscuity.

In a fit of rage, Bortey retaliated by pouring hot water on Ashie Moore. The scuffle that ensued saw Ashie Moore attempting to physically assault Bortey, a situation that required intervention from other regional executives present to prevent further violence.

Underlying Issues

This incident is symptomatic of deeper issues within the Greater Accra NDC. Sources indicate that factionalism and petty infighting have plagued the party’s regional branch for some time.

A regional executive, speaking anonymously, expressed grave concerns about the disunity: “I have never seen the region in disunity like Greater Accra. Nothing happens here without arguments or confrontation. We have not learned any lesson from what happened in Central Region NDC. We have about four different factions in one region, and why should that be so?”

“With the general election only five months away, the internal strife within the Greater Accra NDC could severely impact the party’s performance. Iam worried that the ongoing disunity might derail the party’s efforts in the crucial Greater Accra Region, a key battleground for the upcoming elections” he said
