Zambia’s Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, has survived a helicopter accident in Muchinga Province after a Zambia Air Force aircraft reportedly crashed shortly after takeoff.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 9, 2026, in Nakonde, where the Vice President was travelling as part of an official visit and campaign tour ahead of Zambia’s August 13 general election.
Reports indicate that the helicopter crashed during or shortly after takeoff, although authorities have not yet provided details on the cause of the accident.
The Zambian government has confirmed that Vice President Nalumango and all other occupants on board are safe following the incident.
Early reports have given varying accounts of the number of people on board, with some indicating seven others while others mention eight additional occupants.
However, officials have assured the public that no fatalities have been recorded.
Vice President Nalumango is the running mate of President Hakainde Hichilema in the upcoming general elections.
