The Universities Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has issued a June 30 deadline for the government to address a range of unresolved welfare and conditions-of-service concerns affecting academic staff in public universities.
At its National Executive Council meeting in Ho, the association expressed frustration over delays in implementing agreements reached with government, particularly the signing of an interim salary adjustment deal intended to provide relief ahead of a broader salary review scheduled for 2027.
UTAG also cited unresolved payroll and contract renewal challenges for retired academic staff, unpaid allowances for research fellows and academic librarians, promotion arrears, and delayed salary payments for some staff at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).
The association warned that failure to resolve the issues by the deadline could trigger consultations across its branches for possible industrial action, in accordance with labour laws and the UTAG constitution.
While reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, UTAG said government must act urgently to honour its obligations and preserve industrial peace within the country’s public university system.
