Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commended the United States Embassy in Accra for expediting the same-day visa processing for the mother and cousin of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot in New York, as the Ghanaian government intensifies efforts to support the bereaved family and pursue justice.

Mr. Ablakwa expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for their special intervention, which has paved the way for Madam Doris Adu Gyamfi and her niece to travel to the United States.

“I wish to commend the US Embassy in Accra for the super expedited same-day processing of the visa of the mother and cousin of Javits Frimpong yesterday,” the Minister said.

He added; “We are grateful to President Trump and Mayor Kwame Mamdani for their special intervention.”

The Minister further disclosed that the government remained in close communication with US authorities regarding the investigation into the teenager’s death.

“The Government of Ghana remains in close communication with US authorities on the status of investigations. We shall have no rest until justice is manifestly done,” he stated.

But who was Javits Frimpong, and what exactly happened to the 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager whose death has attracted diplomatic attention in Ghana and the United States?

Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was a 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager who had relocated to New York from Ghana approximately a year before his death to reunite with his father, Thomas Frimpong.

According to reports, the teenager had moved to the United States in pursuit of better educational opportunities and a brighter future.

His death has since left his family, school community and the wider Ghanaian community in mourning.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, expressed sadness over the incident, describing the death of a young person with promising prospects as particularly tragic.

The Ambassador also called for a thorough and impartial investigation, especially in light of allegations that Javits had experienced bullying at school.

Javits was reportedly shot while walking to school in the Bronx, New York, on the morning of Thursday, October 29, 2026.

The shooting reportedly occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. around East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the Bronx.

Police officers who responded to the incident found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident occurred close to the apartment where Javits lived with his father.

Reports by US media outlets indicated that investigators were searching for three teenage suspects in connection with the shooting. At the time of the reports, no arrests had been announced and the motive remained unclear.

One of the most troubling aspects of the case is the allegation that Javits had experienced bullying at school before his death.

His father, Thomas Frimpong, reportedly told journalists that the school’s principal had contacted him about problems involving his son and two other students.

According to the father’s account, the principal informed him that the two students had been suspended following an incident involving Javits.

Thomas also reportedly disclosed that his son had complained about being repeatedly bullied, particularly during lunchtime at school.

The allegations have raised questions about whether the teenager’s reported experiences at school could have any connection to the fatal shooting.

However, investigators have not established a link between the alleged bullying and his death.

Police have reportedly been examining different possible explanations, including robbery and mistaken identity, while seeking additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Following the teenager’s death, Ghana’s government moved to engage American authorities and provide support to the bereaved family.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa reportedly spoke with Javits’ father to convey the government’s condolences and assure him of Ghana’s commitment to pursuing justice.

The Minister emphasised that the government would not abandon the family during this difficult period.

Ghana’s diplomatic representatives in the United States have also engaged the bereaved family, while the country’s Ambassador has called for an impartial investigation into the incident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has maintained that it will continue to monitor developments and pursue the necessary diplomatic and consular interventions.

Another significant development in the case was the intervention to facilitate travel arrangements for Javits’ mother, Madam Doris Adu Gyamfi, who was in Ghana following her son’s death.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reportedly engaged US President Donald Trump over the matter, with the President agreeing to facilitate the visa process to enable the grieving mother to travel to the United States.

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, also directed that the government provide financial and logistical assistance to support her travel arrangements.

The Foreign Affairs Minister subsequently announced that the US Embassy in Accra had processed the visas for the mother and her niece on the same day.

The development will enable the family members to travel to the United States and reunite with relatives as they mourn the teenager.

Javits’ death has also affected his classmates and the wider school community in the Bronx.

Students reportedly organised a silent vigil in his memory, carrying placards with messages including “Justice for Javits”, “Forever 15” and “Protect Kids, Not Guns”.

The gathering provided an opportunity for students to mourn their colleague while drawing attention to concerns about gun violence and bullying.

The incident has renewed discussions about the safety of young people in American schools and the need to address violence involving teenagers.

The investigation into Javits Frimpong’s death remains central to the family’s quest for answers.

Ghana’s government has pledged to maintain close communication with US authorities and continue providing support to the bereaved family.

For the family, the priority remains understanding the circumstances surrounding the death of their 15-year-old son and ensuring that anyone found responsible is held accountable.

Mr. Ablakwa has reiterated the government’s position, declaring;

“The Foreign Ministry and our diplomatic missions will continue to actively pursue justice for all our compatriots everywhere in the world — an attack on a Ghanaian anywhere in the world is an attack on all of us.”

He also expressed sympathy for the bereaved parents, saying:

“No parent deserves to lose their 15-year old in these heart wrenching circumstances.”

As investigations continue, Ghana says it will remain engaged until justice is manifestly done.
