Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has called for comprehensive reforms in political financing across Africa, warning that the growing influence of money in politics poses a threat to democratic governance and public confidence.
Speaking on behalf of Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the opening of a three-day High-Level Regional Convening on the Financialization of Politics in Africa in Accra, Mr. Nyarko Ampem said issues such as opaque campaign financing, vote buying and illicit financial flows were undermining democratic systems on the continent.
The conference, held under the theme “Advancing Reform, Accountability and Democratic Integrity,” brought together political leaders, anti-corruption institutions, civil society organisations, development partners and governance experts to deliberate on practical solutions to political financing challenges in Africa.
Mr. Nyarko Ampem said Ghana recognises the need for greater transparency and accountability in political funding and is pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s governance framework.
He highlighted initiatives including the Conduct of Public Officers Bill and the National Ethics and Anti-Corruption Action Plan as key measures being advanced to establish stronger mechanisms for regulating political party and campaign financing.
According to him, ensuring integrity in political financing is essential to protecting democratic participation, restoring public trust and promoting sustainable development.
He stressed the need for African countries to adopt effective systems that promote accountability, reduce the influence of illicit money in politics and safeguard the integrity of democratic institutions.
