The Ada Traditional Council in the Greater Accra Region has suspended four of its members for two years over what it describes as defiance of the Council’s directives concerning the cancellation of the 2026 Grand Durbar.

The suspension, contained in a notice dated August 14, 2026, takes effect immediately and will run until August 13, 2028.

The affected members are Nene Tetteh Ayiku Abordonu IV, Nene Osakonor Okronipah IV, Asafoatsengua Dabra V, and Nene Djabaku Kubi V.

According to the Council, the four members defied an earlier decision to cancel the Grand Durbar scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026.

The Council said the decision to suspend the members was based on several alleged breaches, including what it described as a violation of the authority of the Ada Traditional Council, which it considers the highest traditional authority in the Ada Traditional Area.

It further accused the members of disregarding established ceremonial and customary protocols governing the Ada Grand Durbar.

The Council said the Adibiawe Clan, which traditionally performs the opening customs at the durbar grounds, was denied its customary role when the event proceeded without its participation and consent.

It also cited concerns over the performance of traditional religious rites by the Worli (Priest) and the omission of closing customs traditionally performed by the Dangmebiawe Clan.

According to the Council, the actions have disrupted established customary practices and require appropriate ritual processes to restore the ceremonial order.

The suspended members hold various traditional positions, including Ada State Dzase, Asafoatsengua of Kabiawe Kponor, Wetsoyi of Kabiawe Tsu and Wetsoyi of Kabiawe Yumu.

The Registrar of the Ada Traditional Council directed that the suspension notice be communicated to relevant traditional, security and state authorities, including the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Ghana Police Service, district assemblies and Members of Parliament in the affected areas.

The Council maintained that its decision was intended to uphold its authority and preserve the traditional, cultural and spiritual protocols governing activities within the Ada Traditional Area.
