A 37-year-old woman, identified as Rukaya Alhassan, has allegedly died by suicide at Kasoa-95 in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The incident reportedly occurred in the woman’s room and was discovered by her 11-year-old daughter, who found her mother suspended from a ceiling fan with a piece of decorative fabric tied around her neck.
The distressed child alerted co-tenants and neighbours, who rushed to the room and cut the fabric in an attempt to save her.
However, their efforts proved unsuccessful, as Alhassan was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The Assembly Member for the Kasoa New Town Electoral Area, Hon. Abdul Wahab, who is also an uncle of the deceased, told the media that preliminary checks had uncovered a series of audio messages exchanged between Alhassan and her husband, who is currently abroad.
According to him, the recordings indicate that the deceased had been emotionally distressed and had pleaded with her husband to return home, reportedly threatening to harm herself if he failed to do so.
Her husband, in response, is said to have urged her not to take her own life and reminded her of their young daughter.
While the audio messages appear to point to emotional distress as a possible factor, some residents have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the death and are calling for a thorough investigation to establish whether any foul play was involved.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Seth Serwonoo Banini, visited the scene after receiving news of the incident.
The MCE expressed sadness over the death and assured the family that the Municipal Assembly would arrange immediate psychological support for the deceased’s 11-year-old daughter, who is reportedly traumatised by the incident.
The police have conveyed the body and commenced investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Alhassan’s death.
