Mr Stephen Donkor, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s 2020 parliamentary candidate for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, has reportedly picked nomination forms to contest the party’s General Secretary position, currently held by Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
The reported move could set the stage for a contest for one of the NDC’s key administrative positions, although further details about Donkor’s campaign, including his official declaration and policy priorities, are yet to emerge.
Donkor was elected in August 2019 as the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai ahead of the 2020 general elections.
He subsequently lost the parliamentary contest to the New Patriotic Party’s Alfred Obeng Boateng.
His reported interest in the General Secretary position raises questions about whether he can mount a credible challenge to Kwetey, who currently occupies the role.
The General Secretary plays a central role in the party’s organisation, administration and coordination of political activities.
Any challenge to the incumbent is therefore likely to draw attention from party members as preparations for the next internal elections gather momentum.
However, whether Donkor can pose a serious challenge will depend on factors such as his support base across the party, his campaign message, his relationships with grassroots members and delegates, and the level of backing he can secure from party structures nationwide.
For now, the reported development has sparked a key question among NDC supporters: Does Stephen Donkor stand a chance against Fifi Kwetey?
