Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for holding its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on August 6, the same day Ghana commemorates the victims of last year’s military helicopter crash.
Speaking on the timing of the protest, Tanko questioned why the opposition party chose to stage a political demonstration instead of joining the nation in honouring the eight people who lost their lives in the tragedy.
“Is Nana B a Somalian or an Afghanistan? Is he not a Ghanaian? Is he telling the whole world they’ve forgotten that 6th August was the day we had the tragedy? Why are they not here?” he asked.
Tanko argued that the day should have been dedicated to remembering the victims and showing solidarity with their families rather than engaging in political activities.
His comments come as the NPP proceeded with its planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, which the party says is intended to defend constitutional governance, the rule of law and freedom of expression.
Meanwhile, government officials, the Ghana Armed Forces, bereaved families and members of the public gathered at a National Inter-Faith Memorial Service to mark the first anniversary of the August 6, 2025 military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight public servants and military officers.
