The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has expressed deep concern over the recent devastating floods that have affected several communities across the country following days of heavy rainfall.
In a statement issued by its President, David Tamakloe, PRINPAG said the disaster has resulted in the loss of lives, widespread displacement, and extensive destruction of property and livelihoods, describing the situation as deeply distressing and one that requires urgent national attention.
The Association extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones and expressed solidarity with affected persons, pledging the support of its member media organisations in covering relief and recovery efforts.
PRINPAG also commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Meteorological Agency and other state institutions for their ongoing rescue operations and relief efforts, despite the scale of the disaster.
While acknowledging the efforts of emergency responders, the Association criticised what it described as negligent human activities that may have worsened the impact of the floods.
It cited construction on waterways, poor waste disposal practices, and violations of building regulations as key contributing factors.
PRINPAG called for stricter enforcement of building codes and a zero-tolerance approach to construction in flood-prone areas, urging relevant authorities to strengthen compliance with spatial planning regulations.
It also recommended major investments in modern drainage systems, a comprehensive review of urban planning policies, and sustained public education on environmental management and waste disposal.
According to the Association, the recurring nature of flooding in Ghana highlights gaps in enforcement and planning that must be urgently addressed to prevent future disasters.
PRINPAG further urged Ghanaians to adhere to safety advisories, avoid flooded roads, and prioritize personal safety during the ongoing rainy season.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism, public education, and advocacy for long-term solutions to Ghana’s environmental and infrastructural challenges.
