The Ghana Police Service has arrested 54 people and seized a large quantity of suspected narcotics during a series of intelligence-led operations across several communities in Kumasi as part of efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks.

The operation, carried out by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team (SOT), targeted areas identified as hotspots for the illegal drug trade, including Atwima-Koforidua, Abuakwa, Sofo Line Lorry Station, Ash Town, Ahwia, Bantama, Aputuogya, Krofrom, Pankrono, Tafo, Twumduase, Krofrom-Colombia and Alabar.

Among those arrested were 49 men and five women, including 11 Malian nationals and 38 Ghanaians, all being investigated for various suspected drug-related offences.

Police said the raids led to the recovery of significant quantities of suspected narcotic substances, including hundreds of Tramadol tablets of different strengths, dozens of boxes of the drug, and hundreds of sealed packages containing dried leaves believed to be narcotics. Officers also confiscated bottles suspected to contain narcotic substances, drug-processing materials, foreign cigarettes, mobile phones, two casino jackpot machines and four unregistered motorcycles.

“The Ghana Police Service assures the public that intelligence-led operations targeting criminal activities, particularly illicit drug trafficking and related offences, will continue across the country.”

The suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue and are expected to be arraigned before court upon completion of investigations.

The Police Service also appealed to the public to continue providing credible information to support efforts to combat crime and improve public safety.
