The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has received petitions concerning allegations of extortion and related conduct made by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, against Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a public notice issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the OSP said it had received a joint petition from two persons, as well as two separate petitions from other individuals, in relation to the allegations.

“The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has taken note of public allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive of Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin,” the notice stated.

“The OSP also acknowledges a joint petition submitted by two persons, as well as two separate petitions submitted by other persons, in relation to the allegations.”

The OSP said it would assess the matter to determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.

“Given the nature of the allegations, the OSP will assess the case and determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted,” it stated.

The OSP petitions stem from the growing dispute between GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over alleged US$1.7 billion losses linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin has questioned the losses and demanded accountability over GoldBod’s role, while Gyamfi has rejected the claims and accused him of pursuing a smear campaign.

During the exchanges, Gyamfi described Afenyo-Markin and his associates as “devious extortionists”, prompting the Minority Leader to threaten legal action over the allegation.
